Petrol costs Rs 389.14 per litre in Pakistan today. If you own a car or a motorcycle in Pakistan, this is almost certainly what you put in it. Petrol is the country's most widely used transport fuel, and when a revision is announced it is the petrol figure that leads the news.

Motor spirit, or Super at the pump
The notifications call it motor spirit and most pumps call it Super. It is a light refined fuel made for engines with spark plugs, and the standard grade sold across Pakistan is 92 RON, which suits the compression ratios of the engines most common on the roads here.
It evaporates easily, and that is on purpose: it is what lets a cold engine start on a January morning in Quetta. It is also why a jerry can left in the sun is a bad idea.
Who is buying it
Practically everyone with a private vehicle. The 660cc to 1600cc cars that fill city traffic, the millions of 70cc and 125cc motorcycles that carry most of the country's daily commuting, rickshaws, small delivery vans and the generators that keep shops running through an outage.
Because so many people buy it, a petrol revision is felt straight away and everywhere. For a motorcyclist filling up twice a week, even a two-rupee change shows up in the weekly budget.
One price, everywhere
Petrol carries a single maximum retail price for the whole country, so Karachi and Gilgit pay the same notified rate. That is by design: an inland freight margin is built into the price to spread transport costs evenly across the country.
If a station charges more than the notified figure, distance from the refinery does not explain it, and it is worth reporting.
Getting more out of a litre
- Check tyre pressure first. It is the cheapest fix and the one most often skipped, and under-inflated tyres waste more fuel than most driving habits.
- Look ahead in traffic. Accelerating hard towards a red light burns fuel only to throw it away again when you brake.
- Do not pay for octane your engine cannot use. Check the manual before switching to a higher grade.
- Short cold-start trips are the most expensive kilometres you drive. Combine errands into one run where you can.

- No. OGRA notifies one ordinary petrol grade, MS 92 RON, and a separate rate for Hi-Octane. There is no third ‘pure petrol’ grade with a notified price of its own, so a rate quoted under that name is not coming from any notification. Searches for pure petrol usually mean fuel that has not been adulterated at the pump, which is a question of enforcement rather than of price.
- Does petrol in Pakistan contain ethanol?
- OGRA’s price notification states no blend ratio for MS 92, and none of the sources this site republishes reports one for the petrol sold at ordinary pumps. So if you see a blend claimed alongside a price somewhere else, that claim is not coming from the notification.
- What does 92 RON mean?
- RON is the research octane number, a measure of how well a fuel resists knocking under compression. 92 suits the engines that make up most of the cars and motorcycles on Pakistani roads. For an engine that was not designed for a higher number, a higher-octane fuel only costs more.
