High-Speed Diesel costs Rs 424.04 per litre in Pakistan today. Diesel rarely gets the headline that petrol does, which is odd, because it has a far wider effect on what ordinary life costs. Almost everything you buy travelled on it.

How it differs from petrol

High-speed diesel is a heavier fuel that ignites under compression instead of from a spark. It carries more energy per litre than petrol and suits engines that work hard for long stretches, which is what trucks, buses and tractors here are asked to do.

The ‘high-speed’ in the name separates it from light diesel oil, which is meant for slower industrial engines. Truck engines, buses and tractors under load all run at high revolutions and take HSD.

Why a diesel revision reaches your kitchen

Diesel is a cost at almost every step of the supply chain: the truck bringing vegetables down from the north, the bus fare a factory worker pays, the tractor ploughing a field in Punjab, the tube well irrigating it, and the generator keeping a cold store running through load-shedding.

When diesel rises, freight rates follow, and food prices follow freight. The effect takes a few weeks to show and does not match the fuel increase rupee for rupee, but it does arrive.

Who depends on it

  • Long-haul trucking and inter-city bus operators, for whom fuel is the single largest running cost.
  • Agriculture — tractors, harvesters and the tube wells that irrigate a great deal of Pakistani farmland.
  • Industry and commerce, where standby generators run as a matter of routine.
  • Larger SUVs and pickups, though these are a small share of total consumption.

A note on running costs

Diesel engines usually travel further on a litre, which is why operators stay with diesel even when its per-litre price is above petrol. To compare the two fairly, work out the cost per kilometre for the job being done.

Common questions

What is the high-speed diesel price in Pakistan today?
High-Speed Diesel is Rs 424.04 per litre in Pakistan today. One national ceiling price. No Pakistani source publishes a diesel rate city by city.
Is diesel the same price in every city in Pakistan?
Yes. High-speed diesel is notified at one countrywide ceiling price, the same way petrol is. PSO’s own table has a single diesel figure for the whole country, and its city links change only the heading. No Pakistani source publishes a diesel price city by city.
What is the difference between HSD and LDO?
High-speed diesel is the road fuel for trucks, buses, tractors and diesel cars, made for fast-running engines. Light diesel oil is a heavier, cheaper grade burned in slow-speed engines, furnaces and boilers. They are notified separately, at different rates, and are not interchangeable in a vehicle.
Why does the diesel rate affect prices in the shops?
Because almost everything that reaches a shop travelled on a diesel truck, and the tractors and tube-wells behind the food supply run on it too. A move in the diesel rate passes into freight charges and from there into the price of goods, which is why it is watched well beyond people who own a diesel vehicle.
Diesel ka rate har sheher mein aik hi hai?
Ji haan. Diesel ka rate bhi petrol ki tarah poore Pakistan ke liye aik hi notify hota hai. Koi bhi Pakistani source diesel ka rate sheher ke hisab se alag publish nahi karta.
