Between petrol and diesel

Kerosene is heavier than petrol and lighter than diesel. It burns steadily in a simple wick lamp or pressure stove with no engine involved, which is why it is useful in places with little infrastructure.

Superior Kerosene Oil (SKO) is the grade notified for household use. Jet fuel is closely related, but it is a separate product with its own specification.

Where it still matters

In the northern valleys and other areas the natural gas network does not reach, kerosene remains a working household fuel — room heating through a hard winter, cooking, and lighting where the electricity supply is unreliable or absent.

For those households, a change in the notified kerosene rate changes what it costs to keep a room warm in January.

Why urban demand faded

  • Piped natural gas and LPG cylinders displaced it for cooking in most towns and cities.
  • Grid electricity, however patchy, replaced it for lighting.
  • Handling is inconvenient and the safety margin is thinner than a sealed cylinder's.

Handling it safely

Store it in a clearly labelled metal container away from living areas. Never keep it in a soft-drink bottle: children mistake it for a drink, and this is a common cause of accidental poisoning. Burn it only in appliances made for kerosene and keep the room ventilated, because a heater running in a closed room can build up carbon monoxide with very little warning.
