Hi-Octane costs Rs 400.00 per litre in Pakistan today. People give more confident advice about Hi-Octane than about any other fuel sold here, and much of it is wrong. Hi-Octane does not clean an engine or add power to it. What it does is resist knocking better than ordinary petrol, which matters a lot for some engines and very little for most.

What the octane number measures
Under compression, fuel can ignite before the spark plug fires. Mechanics call this knocking or pinking, and over time it damages an engine. The octane number measures how well a fuel resists it, and that is all it measures.
So a higher number tells you which engines the fuel is meant for, not how good it is. An engine designed for 92 RON gains nothing from 97 RON, because it was not knocking to begin with.
Which cars need it
Turbocharged and high-compression engines, and performance models tuned abroad for higher-grade fuel. In those engines a lower grade has a real cost: the engine computer delays the ignition timing to protect itself, and you lose power and fuel economy while thinking you saved money.
The owner's manual or the label inside the fuel flap will tell you which grade your engine needs. Go by that before a mechanic's opinion or a forum thread.
Why the price changes from city to city
Petrol and diesel carry one national ceiling price. Hi-Octane is priced by the oil marketing companies instead of being notified centrally, so its rate differs between cities.
That is why, in the city tables on this site, only the Hi-Octane figures change from row to row while petrol and diesel stay the same.

Work it out for your own car. Take the Hi-Octane rate for your city from the table above, subtract today’s petrol rate, and multiply by the litres you buy in a month. If your manual does not call for Hi-Octane, that is money spent for no benefit.
