Petrol price without levy and tax

Take away the petroleum levy, the climate support levy and sales tax, and a litre of petrol comes to Rs 304.14. That covers the fuel, the freight and the regulated margins. It is a calculation on the published components, not a price any station sells at, but it shows that 21.8%of today's rate is set by policy.

The ex-refinery price of petrol

The ex-refinery or import price is Rs 278.58 per litre today. It is the cost of the fuel before anything is added inside Pakistan, worked out from the international price of refined petrol and the rupee's exchange rate. How petrol price is calculated in Pakistan walks through that calculation step by step.

Which parts follow oil prices and which are set by government

Only one component follows the market: the ex-refinery price, which moves with the international petrol benchmark and the dollar rate.

The others are decided by government. The oil company and dealer margins and IFEM are fixed in the notification, and the petroleum levy and climate support levy are notified by the federal government. They stay in place until they are revised, which is why a fall in global prices reaches the pump as a smaller fall than the headlines suggest.
