Propane and butane in a cylinder

Liquefied petroleum gas is mainly propane and butane, held as a liquid under modest pressure so a useful quantity fits in a cylinder you can carry. Release the pressure and it returns to gas at the burner.

Because it is sold by weight, its rate cannot be compared directly with the per-litre price of petrol or diesel. For cooking or heating, the useful comparison is how much heat you get for the money against the fuel you would otherwise use.

Why demand rises in winter

In much of the country, piped natural gas pressure falls away in the cold months exactly when households need it most. LPG fills that gap, which is why cylinder demand and cylinder prices both tend to climb from December onwards.

In Balochistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other areas with little or no pipeline coverage, LPG is the main cooking fuel all year.

LPG in vehicles

Some vehicles run on LPG after a conversion. It can lower running costs per kilometre, but only a professionally installed and certified kit is safe to use. Cheap conversions are a real fire risk.

Buying and storing sensibly

  • Buy from a recognised distributor and check the cylinder's condition and seal rather than only the price.
  • Insist on weighing. Short filling is the most common complaint in this market.
  • Keep the cylinder upright, at floor level and in a ventilated space. LPG is heavier than air, so a leak collects near the floor.
  • Replace the regulator and hose on schedule. They fail long before the cylinder does.

Common questions

What is the LPG price in Pakistan today?
LPG is Rs 258.65 per kilogram in Pakistan today. Priced per kilogram, not per litre.
Why is LPG priced per kilogram and not per litre?
Because it is held as a liquid under pressure, and its volume changes with temperature while its weight does not. A kilogram is the same amount of gas on a cold morning and a hot afternoon, so the rate is notified per kilogram and cylinders are filled by weight.
Does the LPG rate include the cylinder?
No. The notified figure is a rate per kilogram of the gas itself. The steel cylinder is a separate item and is not part of it.
LPG ka rate kilo ke hisab se kyun hota hai?
Kyunki LPG cylinder mein dabao ke saath liquid ki shakal mein hoti hai, aur garmi sardi mein us ka hajam badalta hai magar wazan nahi. Is liye rate per kilogram notify hota hai aur cylinder wazan se bhare jate hain.
