Light Diesel Oil costs Rs 304.78 per litre in Pakistan today. LDO appears in every price notification but almost never in everyday conversation. You cannot buy it at a filling station, since it is not a road fuel. It is notified alongside the others, though, so it has a place in this guide.

Heavier than road diesel
Light diesel oil is heavier than the high-speed diesel that goes into trucks, and it is meant for engines and burners that run at lower speeds under steady load. Where HSD is built for an engine changing revs all day, LDO suits equipment that starts in the morning and holds one output until evening.
Where it is burned
- Industrial boilers producing process steam — textile processing, food plants, paper and similar operations.
- Slow-speed stationary engines and some older generator sets.
- Certain furnaces and kilns where a light distillate is specified.
A declining share
LDO consumption has thinned over the years. Plants have moved to natural gas where a connection exists, to furnace oil where the economics favour it, and to grid or captive power for electricity. What remains is specialised demand rather than a broad market.
That is worth knowing when you read a revision: a large percentage move in the LDO rate affects far fewer buyers than a small move in diesel.
Keep it out of vehicles
Some people see the lower LDO rate and wonder about using it in a diesel vehicle. Don’t. In a modern high-speed diesel engine it can damage the injectors and the fuel pump, and the repair will cost far more than the fuel saved.
